Delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, ENROUTE proudly announces the launch of a transformative project set to redefine the freight and logistics sector through strategic data sharing for eHGVs
ENROUTE (Efficient Network for Road-freight Optimisation, Utilisation, and Transfer of Energy) is spearheading a new initiative aimed at significantly enhancing the operational efficiency of eHGV (electric heavy goods vehicles) charging and delivering a substantial reduction in carbon emissions within the industry. The project addresses the urgent need for a scalable, efficient solution to support the transition to low-carbon freight operations, focusing on real-time data sharing across the value chain to facilitate better decision-making and improve overall fleet efficiency.

The vision of ENROUTE is built on a foundation of innovation and collaboration, consortium members include award winning logistics company Welch’s Transport, innovative transport technologies company Syselek, and the prestigious University of Cambridge. Together, they are developing a model that not only enhances operational efficiencies but also prioritizes environmental sustainability. Their primary goals include mapping the existing landscape to identify opportunities for data sharing, building a robust business case that outlines the economic and environmental benefits, and implementing a proof-of-concept to showcase the practical viability of their approach.

Innovative strategies are employed to overcome challenges related to commercial sensitivities and privacy concerns using anonymisation techniques and advanced security measures, ensuring that all participant data remains secure and confidential. This initiative aims to make eHGV operations more efficient while supporting the broader industry shift towards sustainable energy use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

“Through the ENROUTE project, we are setting a new standard in logistics innovation. Our commitment to integrating cutting-edge data-sharing technology not only enhances operational efficiencies but also significantly advances our sustainability goals. At Welch’s Transport, we are excited to lead the way in demonstrating that environmental responsibility and business success go hand in hand in the modern freight and logistics landscape,” said Chris Welch, Managing Director of Welch’s Transport.

The positive impacts of the ENROUTE project extend beyond immediate operational improvements. By proving the effectiveness of their data sharing model, they aim to instil confidence among stakeholders and spur further investments in eHGV technologies and infrastructure. This is expected to catalyse a broader adoption of eco-friendly practices across the freight and logistics sector, aligning with national and global environmental goals.
