Sam says: “The 18 tonne GVW Volvo FL with its 7.7 litre 250hp engine really suits the work we do and the residuals at five years make real sense for the business. Furthermore, the latest day cab really helps to minimise the overall dimensions, which translates directly into improved site access.”
Over the past few years the family-owned company has grown from a £2 million turnover business with a handful of trucks to one that now operates 28 trucks with a turnover of circa £9 million in 2015. “This type of expansion demands reliability and productivity and that’s exactly what we get from Volvo trucks and the dealership in Enfield,” says Sam. “We have a great relationship with Steve Askew at the dealership and the support we enjoy is second-to-none.”
The four new Volvo FL skip loaders are the result of the Volvo initiative that has seen the manufacturer team up with some of the key bodybuilding concerns to make complete working trucks available at optimum delivery lead times.
“Ordering these Volvo FL skip loaders as complete units without having to deal with a separate bodybuilder for the skip loader elements simplified the entire process and let us concentrate on the business of collecting and recycling construction & demolition waste as well as household clearance waste,” says Sam.
The 3.8 metre wheelbase trucks, which are fitted with 9-speed manual transmissions, feature air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and electric & tinted windows. Additionally, there’s a ‘Comfort’ seat for the driver and the traction control boasts the Volvo hill-hold function, which makes hill starts effortless.
“Our drivers are really happy with these trucks,” says Sam. “They say they’re more comfortable, smoother to drive, quieter and more powerful than our other skip loaders. And, with favourable returns when it comes to mpg, I’d say, all-round, these new Volvo FLs represent a really effective and efficient tool for our business.”
Bodywork comes in the shape of the Hyvalift NG2012XL skip loader with a lifting capacity of between 5.4 and 12 tonnes depending on arm positioning and extension. Featuring independent telescopic extending arms, remote control operation, fast off load and Hyva’s Autosheet system, Sam believes the new skip loaders represent a valuable step forward in terms of safety. “The remote control is a really positive move,” he says. “If you then also take into account the low level nearside window in the truck cab, the four-camera monitoring system and the left turn alert, I would say these trucks set the standard in respect of safety, which is really important to us as a business.”
